What to expect from a personal trainer
Whether you are hoping to get fitter, lose weight, tone up, get fit for sport or just generally take up something new, a personal trainer can be a great way of achieving those goals.
Personal trainers are experienced professionals who will work with you to establish your goals, and then to draw up a specific plan that will help you achieve them, in a way that suits your preferred exercise style. Progress towards your goals will be consistently monitored and your exercise programme will be tweaked to optimise the results. Best of all, they will work through your programme with you, which avoids the lack of motivation that can result from trying to achieve your goals on your own!
Establish Goals
The first thing a personal trainer will do is establish why you have sought out their services. Common reasons for using a personal trainer include:
- To lose weight
- To get fit
- To achieve a more toned physique
- To get fit for sport
- To improve an existing health condition
- As part of injury rehabilitation
- To improve motivation
It is often a combination of these reasons, rather than just one that lead you to seeking out a personal trainer in the first place. Once your personal trainer has talked through your goals with you, they will carry out a basic medical which will normally include checking for existing health conditions and previous injuries, taking blood pressure and your current weight or BMI. They may also ask you about types of exercise that you enjoy in order to establish a programme that will be best suited to you.
Planning a Programme
After the initial assessment your personal trainer will draw you up a programme for the coming weeks. This will depend on your existing daily routine and availability to exercise, but in general you should expect at least 4-5 sessions per week to achieve optimum results.
If you or your personal trainer has access to a gym then some sessions may take place there, but excellent results can be achieved in local parks or countryside, often with minimal equipment and some may even take place in your own home!
The nature of a personal training programme is so varied that it would be impossible to list all of the types of exercise you might experience, but the most successful personal trainers adopt a programme that suits you best and makes working out less of a chore.
Monitoring Progress
The best personal training plans are ones that consistently monitor your progress towards your goals, as well as setting achievable targets for you to work towards. Session by session this may include setting times or challenges for you to beat whilst also using specialist equipment such as heart rate monitors, pedometers and speedometers to monitor your actual level of exercise. At regular periods they will also repeat your medical checks to confirm general progress. Overall, the use of SMART targets in your training will help achieve the best results:
Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time scale
Finally, personal trainers provide you with an exercise plan that is specific to your needs and which can achieve your goals. In addition, one of their biggest attractions is that they provide that motivation, both verbal and literal, to encourage you to stick to your plan and ultimately achieve the body you always wanted.
